Social Justice/Language Justice

This plenary focuses on how to eliminate and replace stigmatizing language and negative bias while also using person-first language within communities of people who struggle with substance use disorder to increase access to services and successful retention in care.

All four 2023 Harm Reduction Conference training sessions must be taken to receive a total of 3.25 credit hours.

National Perspectives on Harm Reduction and Community Health

This session describes the impact of drug use from a national and local perspective, examines the social impact of drug use on communities, and identifies national and local harm reduction activities. Surveillance data will be presented to highlight national and local trends.

All four 2023 Harm Reduction Conference training sessions must be taken to receive a total of 3.25 credit hours.

 

Destigmatization of Drug Use

This session explores the impact of stigma on people who have been diagnosed with substance use disorder (SUD) and those who are not clinically diagnosed but display symptoms. The presenter examines the relationship between stigma and systemic racism, as well as racism’s compounding effect on access to healthcare services for people who use drugs. The presenter also provides strategies for challenging stigma and misconceptions about SUD.

 

Harm Reduction and Family

This training provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of harm reduction and its practical application in daily life.

 

Needle Exchange – NEX

Providers and locations in the District of Columbia that provide needle exchange and harm reduction services.

 

Us Helping Us / People Into Living, Inc.

For over 30 years, Us Helping Us has been providing innovative care and services to improve the health and well-being of Black, gay men. We work every day to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in the entire Black community by providing care to anyone who walks through our door.

 

Family and Medical Counseling Services, Inc.

Family and Medical Counseling Services has two mobile units that provide needle exchange and harm reduction services to some of Washington, DC’s neighborhoods that are impacted by drug use.

 

Honoring Individual Power and Strength (HIPS)

HIPS offers syringe exchange services for people who inject drugs, people who inject hormones, and diabetics at their drop-in center and satellite center at the Downtown Day Services Center, as well as on their mobile van.

 

Bread for the City

Bread for the City provides harm reduction activities and needle exchange services for those in need at its headquarters located at 1525 Seventh Street, NW only.
